Recommended Firsts for Windows

After creating a Windows pre-install, we recommend you follow these steps to patch and secure your newly deployed Windows server:

  1. Specify at Least 2 Cores: We’ve found that Windows gets happier with more cores, and we recommend at least two. While the server is shut down, navigate to the server configuration page to explicitly set the number of cores.
  2.   Continue reading “Recommended Firsts for Windows” »

This applies to both our pre-installed Windows builds and Windows servers you’ve uploaded yourself. In other words, all Windows. These particular directions were written using Windows 2008 Server. Continue reading “Windows Servers: Disk Resizing” »

Pre-installed Linux Servers: Disk Resizing

spindles

Our pre-installed servers make disk resizing very easy. To resize a disk on which an Open Hosting pre-installed Linux server is installed, it is necessary to first resize it from Open Hosting’s dashboard. Continue reading “Pre-installed Linux Servers: Disk Resizing” »

Ubuntu 10 Desktop & Server Pre-installs

We’ve added two more pre-installed images to our library: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Desktop and Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Server. As with the other pre-install images, you need only to create a server and the Open Hosting platform will implicitly create a drive with the OS already installed.

The desktop installation takes a few minutes, because it requires a drive of at least 4GBs for installation. This is a kitchen sink build, which includes the desktop and office and most every package.

The server Installation, on the other hand, takes less than a minute, and no more than 1GB is required for a healthy install. Like our other pre-install systems, it is a minimal build.

As with all the other pre-installed images:

  1. The VNC password is platform-generated and found near your server.
  2. When connecting by VNC, you can login by typing “root” without providing a password.
  3. The root user is disabled for SSH and other remote access.
  4. For accessing by SSH, use the toor user and enter the VNC password.

CentOS 5.7 & Debian 6 Pre-installs

We’ve added two more pre-installed images to our library: CentOS 5.7 and Debian 6. As with the other pre-install images, you need only to create a server and the OHI platform will implicitly create a drive with the OS already installed.

Installation takes less than a minute. And, no more than 2GBs is required for a healthy install. But, our pre-installed Linux images are pretty minimal and don’t include X, KDE, nor Gnome. So, if you expect to install a lot of packages, it is best to start with a drive of more than 2GBs.

CentOS 5.6 Pre-installed Image

We’ve added another pre-installed image to our library: CentOS 5.6. As with the other pre-install images, you need only to create a server and the OHI platform will implicitly create a drive with CentOS 5.6 already installed.

Installation takes less than a minute. And, no more than 2 gigs is required for a healthy install. But, our pre-installed CentOS 5.6 is pretty minimal and doesn’t include X, KDE, nor Gnome. So, if you expect to install a lot of packages, it is best to start with a drive of more than 2 gigs.
