Frequently Asked Questions

Note: Our Forums area contains a large amount of technical documentation about the OpenHosting Virtual Servers.

I like the idea of Utility Pricing, but how can I know what my usage will be, especially CPU and RAM?
Our pricing model places most emphasis on Disk and Bandwidth, which are metrics that are more likely to be known in advance and are used by most hosting providers out there. Also, check out our javascript Utility Ratecalc, a tool designed to calculate a more accurate cost estimate.
I am currently using your service, and according to my OpenVPS control panel I am only using $3 in resources, yet based on your pricing model I'm forced to pay the minimum commit rate of $19.95. Why?
We have two major costs - the computing resources (servers, switches, datacenter and bandiwdth fees) and everything else (staff for answering support, advancing the software, cc processing fees, marketing, business administrative expenses, etc.). The commit rate covers "everything else". We simply could not stay in business if we charged only for the actual rate charges with no minimal monthly payment.
Is there a web based control panel?
Each OpenVPS comes with an OpenVPS control panel which provides access to basic VPS administration features such as restarting, as well as gives access to your account/billing information. Additionally, we have webmin installed by default. Some webmin screenshots here.
I am not familiar with UNIX or Linux, but I have extensive experience with Windows; will I be able to use your services?
If you have no prior UNIX experience, we believe you will find using our services quite challenging initially. However, with the amount of resources in print media and on-line devoted to Linux, learning its basics is relatively easy for the technically-minded and certainly is a lot of fun, so why not try it?
Can I host adult content?
If by that you mean sexually-oriented pictures of naked people, then the answer is no.
Do I get a dedicated IP number?
Yes.
Can I have more than one IP?
Yes.
Will you provide secondary DNS service for my domains?
Yes, for paying customers we will provide secondary DNS for up to 3 domains at no charge.
